Unemployment Theft

A Waterloo woman has been arrested for allegedly stealing a relative’s unemployment benefits, according to the Waterloo Cedar Falls Courier. The relative asked April South to help her apply for unemployment last year but was told that she did not qualify, so she did not pursue the matter further. Then in January the victim was informed by Iowa Workforce Development that she had, in fact, been receiving unemployment benefits. The money was being paid into a bank account in her name and then being spent via a pre-paid credit card. Once the police got involved they were able to find surveillance videos at different locations showing South using the card. South is accused of spending $28,080 of the victim’s unemployment benefits. She has been charged with first degree theft, identity theft, and credit card fraud. Her bond has been set at $30,000.
