Waverly-Shell Rock is being asked by a group of schools led by New Hampton to leave the century-old Northeast Iowa Conference. The Upper Iowa Conference has recently invited New Hampton, Crestwood and Waukon to leave the Northeast Iowa Conference. If one of those schools leaves the Northeast Iowa Conference would be left with five schools and according to its bylaws would not be able to continue without adding schools to get to six.
The strategy behind asking Waverly-Shell Rock to leave is that other smaller schools might be more likely to join the NEIC and keep it solvent without Waverly-Shell Rock in the league. Waverly-Shell Rock’s current BEDS is 596 students and is the largest in the conference and New Hampton is at 272 and is the smallest.
