Waterloo Police Logo on Agenda

The griffin on the patch of the Waterloo Police Department became a topic of conversation at Monday’s Waterloo City Council Meeting, according to the Waterloo Cedar Falls Courier. Attorney Kathryn Mahoney discussed the topic during the public comment section. She claimed the image of a griffin is almost indistinguishable from a dragon used by the Ku Klux Klan. Mahoney argued that the image should be removed and replaced. While several council members agreed with Mahoney and voiced their support for a change others argued the image has never been described as anything other than a griffin, not a dragon. A griffin is a mythological creature that is part eagle and part lion. No decision on the griffin’s future has been made.
