Former Officer Pleads Not-Guilty in Fatal Crash Charges

According to KWWL, Keaton Northup, a former Waterloo police officer, has pleaded not guilty to charges stemming from a fatal motorcycle crash in 2024.

Northup, who was off-duty at the time, is accused of causing the crash that resulted in the death of his girlfriend, Jenna Mills.

According to court documents, the crash took place around 10 p.m. on June 1, 2024. Northup was reportedly driving at speeds over 100 miles per hour in a 45-mile-per-hour zone on Interstate 380 and had a blood alcohol concentration of .292, more than three times the legal limit.

Northup faces two charges: Homicide by Vehicle – Operating Under the Influence, a Class B felony, and Homicide by Vehicle – Reckless Driving, a Class C felony. If convicted, these charges carry penalties of up to 25 years and 10 years in prison, respectively.

Following the incident, Northup was initially placed on administrative leave. His bond was set at $100,000 but was reduced to $25,000 after a petition from his attorney, Robert Rehkemper.

The Waterloo City Council has been notified of Northup’s employment conclusion, effective June 27, 2025, with a payout recommendation for unused benefits totaling $31,342.86.
