Distracted driving is second nature for a lot of people. But it’s also getting a lot of national attention from groups who want to see drivers put down their phones.
In the state of Iowa, there are very few tickets issued for texting and driving. That’s because it’s a secondary offense here in the state. While those numbers are in the single digits in most counties, the governor’s safety bureau is trying to show that texting and driving is a dangerous combination.
Department officials say texting is not often reported in most crashes, but it is a factor in about 60% of all deadly lane departure crashes. And studies have shown that distracted driving is actually worse than drunk driving.
