Governor Kim Reynolds has vetoed a bill that would have restricted the use of eminent domain for carbon capture pipelines. The bill would have required projects requesting use of eminent domain serve the public’s interest. The proposed Summit Carbon Capture pipeline, which is planned to run through the KWAY listening area, would not fit that requirement as it is owned by a private company. Reynolds claims the bill goes too far, suggesting it would impact other pipeline projects that use voluntary easements, and that the insurance mandates in the bill could kill that project. House Speaker Pat Grassley, from New Hartford, says he has requested all members to sign a petition to reconvene the legislature in a special session to override the veto. He says this veto represents a major setback for Iowa and that landowner rights are a fundamental right in Iowa.
